The band Couper began as a solo project, but even from the start it was anything but solo. A year into his Master of Education coursework at Milligan College, daniel couper set to work recording a debut album, compiling the contributions of over fifty mellifluous friends to bring his songs to life. Released in early 2017, Bienvenu was a fitting self-portrait — an individual expression of identity forged in the context of community. (See who contributed in the Lyrics and Liner Notes.)
As work on Bienvenu came to a close, daniel started writing songs for a literary-themed follow-up EP called Epilogue: The Bienvenu Stories, which he released in July of 2017. Soon after, daniel began gathering pen-wielding friends to work on a book of poetry, prose, and artwork that would dig deeper into the stories that had inspired the EP, from The Velveteen Rabbit to Crime and Punishment. The result was The Story Is Yours Now (which is available in print or as a Kindle eBook).
Meanwhile, daniel and his wife Bets began performing live together across southern Appalachia, often accompanied by many of the same musicians who had contributed to Bienvenu and Epilogue. Given the relative inefficiency of fifteen-member ensembles, though, the pair began to pare down their touring outfit. These days, having taken Couper as their [very creative] moniker, Bets and daniel can be found touring the southeast as a duo, in an acoustic quartet, or with their sixish-piece band. (Keep tabs on their travels on the Shows page.)
